This post made me giggle! Each horse has his or her own special personality, and just like kids in a school, you can never predict totally how it will all end up. Sure, you see tendencies and stuff, but in the end each horse is unique. I did purchase a pony mare from auction– she had lived next door to us for years. I had watched this mare have babies, live with many other different horses (it was an Amish farm), cart around little kids, graze picketed in the yard… a real sweet mare. She’s easy to get along with, she doesn’t threaten people, she is truly wonderfully patient. I felt so sorry for her when I first brought her home, because the two other mares would haze her around, and the gelding would pin his ears and also haze her. Boy… I got over my guilt fast. She just waited until she was really sure who was who, and what the routine was, and how the system worked. Then one week, she systematically kicked the snot out of all three horses, in sequence, highest to lowest. She will share the feeder with them, share the stall with them, but when she tells them to move, they do it willingly, or she will run backwards with feet flying and squeals that sound like the ultimate cursing out. She has never lost her sweet attitude with people, and she still will share space and food with the lowest horse in the group. Not every alpha mare is nasty or bossy to people. Some are real caretakers. So maybe your mare is smart enough to understand the difference between humans and horses, and she is well aware that just because her position has changed in the pasture doesn’t mean her position with humans has shifted. Anyway, sounds like a really great mare and a pretty good thinker, if she waited this long to get the lay of the land.
